LUNG CANCER

The best way to prevent lung cancer is to not smoke, or stop smoking if you do. We offer smoking cessation services.

Chest X ray screening done yearly or more often has not been shown to be of benefit for lung cancer survival even in heavy smokers.

A recent study did find some benefit from use of CT scanning in smokers between age 55 and 75 years of age who have smoked the equivalent of a pack of cigarettes daily for 30 years or more. The American Cancer Society and the USPSTF both consider this an option for such persons. Medicare has recently made a decision to cover such screening. Because CT scans detect many conditions which may not be cancer or are incidental, be prepared to undergo testing with more scans, and other procedures which may be unpleasant should an abnormality be found on CT.
