East Bay Diabetes Education Program Merits American Diabetes Association Recognition

(San Leandro, Ca. March 19, 2012) – The prestigious American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate for a quality diabetes self management education program was recently awarded to the Diabetes Educators of San Leandro on January 19, 2012. The program is sponsored by Harley S. Schultz MD and Vladimir A Titov, MD, PhD at 13851 East 14 St., San Leandro, Ca. 94578.

The American Diabetes Association believes that this program offers high quality education that is an essential component of effective diabetes treatment.

The Association’s Education Recognition Certificate assures that educational programs meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. Programs apply for recognition voluntarily. Programs that achieve recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide individuals with comprehensive information about diabetes management. “The process gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of services they provide,” comments Dr. Harley Schultz, MD. “It also assures consumers that they will receive high quality service.”

Education Recognition is verified by a certificate from the ADA and is awarded for four years. This is the third term for which this program has been certified.

According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 25.8 million people in the US with diabetes. This amounts to 8.5% of the population. Each day over 5000 individuals are diagnosed with diabetes. While diabetes can cause serious problems such as heart disease, kidney failure, strokes, blindness and amputations, it is the goal of Diabetes Educators of San Leandro to empower patients to maximize their health and minimize the adverse consequences of diabetes.

The program also supports a diabetes support group that is open to the community, meeting the first Monday of each month at 5 PM at the San Leandro Surgery Center.
