WHO MAKES UP THESE GUIDELINES, ANYWAY?

There are many different organizations, often with a particular focused interest, that will issue guidelines for testing. For example, the American Cancer Society has guidelines for finding certain cancers, the American Urologic Association has focused on prostate cancer screening, the National Health Service in England has a set of guidelines, and the US Preventive Services Task Force issues a variety of guidelines.

In our opinion, the more narrowly focused the organization, the more likely they are to recommend screening for a condition that is treated by their experts. That is why more general organizations, like the US Preventive Services Task Force, may be more applicable to our patients. We then try to filter these recommendations based on our best professional judgment, years of experience, an evaluation of costs and risks involved, and the likelihood that a person will benefit from applying the guidelines.
